Easy Company
During World War II, E Company, otherwise known as 'Easy' Company, was a unit of the 2nd Battalion of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, which in turn was a part of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division. Along with the 506th, the 101st Airborne also consisted of the 501st and 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiments, along with two regiments of Glider Infantry and a number of support battalions (artillery, engineers, medical, etc.). Each Parachute Regiment consisted of three battalions, and these battalions each consisted of a headquarters (HQ) section and three companies. Alongside Easy Company in the 2nd Battalion were D (Dog) Company and F (Fox) Company. A company was broken down into an HQ section and three platoons, with each platoon having three rifle squads and a mortar team.
Easy Company would go on to become one of the most well-known units of World War II, in no small part due to the HBO miniseries 'Band of Brothers' and its precursor, the book of the same name by Stephen Ambrose. Their journey would take them from the mosquito-riddled backwoods of Georgia right the way through Europe until they reached Hitler's 'Eagle's Nest' at Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps. This journey would see them at the forefront of some of the most decisive and bloody battles in Western Europe during the war. This is the story of part of that journey
This table gives a breakdown of how manpower was dispersed downwards among the units.
